Sneaky peek?

Kate took a deep steadying breath and approached the old oak. There was a stump in front of it where she and Sam had used to take the children for picnics.

She stood for a moment and gazed up at the enormous, ancient tree and wondered if it could really be a place that held a gateway to another world. Then she knelt to place the candle in the centre of the stump. She lit it and carefully arranged the photos and pendant around it. On impulse she took some fallen leaves and arranged them too. Then she took back her favourite of the selection of photos and tucked it into her pocket. She thought for a moment and then stood and addressed the tree, feeling more than a little silly.

“I have no idea why I’m doing this.” She began, “But I do know I want my best friend back. I want Tom and Susan to have their Mother back please and if there is any way that can happen … well…… it’d be the best thing for all of us. I don’t know if there are special words to say or whether I have to hug you or something, but I’m here for Sam, lighting the way like she asked. I only hope it’s enough.” She reached out to touch the deeply creased bark and pulled back her hand, hesitant to hope and feeling distinctly daft she checked her watch by the light of the flickering candle. 11.55.

She took a long look at Sam’s laughing face in the photo in her jacket pocket, reached out again. Her hand just kept on going as if the tree wasn’t there. She pulled it back, tried again. It was like a film special effect, her hand went straight into the tree, but it felt like there was nothing there. She flicked on the torch for a better look, but the damn thing flared and died. She shook it, banged it against her leg, tried again, nothing. Heart pounding harder now she stepped away from the tree but couldn’t take her eyes from its dark bulk. It was just a tree, and a familiar one at that, her initials and Sam’s were carved on it, but somehow it became menacing in the dark. It was midnight, in the oldest local woods, said to be haunted, on Hallowe’en. Kate would have laughed if she’d not been so terrified. She’d discussed this with Sam, almost crying with laughter, in horror films why do they always go to the woods? Why do they open the door? This was the place and time the main character should not be. Certain death was usually on its way and she might just escape by the skin of her teeth. Then Kate heard the voices.

Education with a pot on!

Dino still has the cast on, he has another week to go. But he wants a badge at beavers - the animal lover one and he has to keep a record of how he cares for one animal, for 2 weeks. So today he started on that.

Both kids have been doing Hallowe’en activity stuff too - we carved a pumpkin, made soup, and Mimi drew lots and lots of witches! Tomorrow we have a home ed hallowe’en party and then Dino is at the beavers one in the evening.

Mimi is spontaneously writing and starting to read now and Dino is just playing with numbers at odd moments - he started telling me doubles of things in the post office yesterday! "2 lots of 5 are 10, 2 lots of 10 are 20" etc.

Oh, and anyone want to buy a book?

Stormy

Killer Storms?

The first is set to lash the nation from October 26 to
November 1 and will affect most of Britain, he said.

Winds will reach 80-100mph and there could be some tornado activity. But this is just the “warm-up”.

From November 8 to 13 another system will batter the nation with winds of between 90mph to 110mph. While the worst affected areas will be Scotland and Northern Ireland it will still pack a hefty punch elsewhere.

But the final, most intense period will be during November 24 to 28, he said. Wind speeds will reach hurricane force, with gusts potentially topping 130mph.

It’s Oct 25th and it’s cold but calm. Will be watching the weather!

Technobabble

Apparently the host server for one of my business accounts - the new one - keeps banning me. The reason a reboot solves it is nothing to do with my puter but is because my ISP assigns a new number to every sign in. When I reboot it gives me a new IP number - so I’m allowed back in, until it bans me again.

So, a small hitch in getting the new business running then but it’ll be ok. Ihelm are checking whether it’s the server that is at fault or the settings I had in Thunderbird (which were identical to those for Ethics Trading so I can’t see how, but you never know right?) In the meantime the new email is online only and I’ll set up the new site to take email from Ethics instead.

No rest for the wicked right? Garden to dig, kids to educate, baking to do, washing up to do and a couple of parcels to get sorted.

Doing deals and Techy help please

Deals.

Dino isn’t allowed to: ride a bike, play on the climbing frame, jump off the shed roof, do sports etc

Dino is allowed to: Go to school (rofl), do writing and quiet activities sitting at a table where he can support his wrist properly.

What is he doing? Chasing the (borrowed) dog round the garden. *sigh* Those of you that have met us or read regularly will know Dino is just not a sedate child. He hates sitting down for anything other than food. So we’ve done a deal - if he keeps away from the things he’s not supposed to do, then he doesn’t have to do the writing and stuff either. A complete 4 week formal education break - until the cast is off. We’re still watching class TV and doing lots of verbal and discussion stuff but his handwriting will go to pot.

We did tie dyeing at home ed group and Mimi wants to show off her top she made:

Techy help.

Please? I’m baffled. There are times when my email fails to come in, it times out and I get a garbled error message that doesn’t tell me anything. The ISP provided one is usually ok, it’s the privately hosted ones that are the problem. A puter reboot seems to fix it - which implies to me that it’s a problem at my end but I have no idea what it could be or how to fix it.

Someone suggested an overheating Router - I don’t have one. Could the Modem need replacing? If it was general connection issues I’d either blame the ISP or the modem. But this is weird!

Ideas in comments please….

Woohoo! Go Me!

I’ve been awarded BT Tradespacer of the Week.

Because:

Quote: Not only is she selling a particularly ethical product, she also displays a very human side to her business through her posts.

I like that, that made me grin! Who’da thunk, I’m human after all.

New business idea coming along nicely but I can’t tell you or I’d have to kill you! emoticon  Promise, I’ll post it up here as soon as we launch properly, maybe even a bit before so you can have a sneaky peek.

Dunked it in the bath

I turned round to grab a flannel and he dunked the entire arm and cast in the bath. It was soaked and dripping but seemed solid so we dried it gently with a towel and I sent him to bed.

This morning it’s still damp but seems solid so I called fracture clinic.

Apparently the new stuff they impregnate the bandage with is resin based - lighter and doesn’t dissolve in the bath. Getting it soaked isn’t recommended and if it stays damp it might rub or get uncomfy - but it’ll be fine. So no afternoon spent hanging about at the hospital for us then!

Anything to get out of writing…

We were at the family drs at 2.30, arrived at hospital at 3.

Several X-rays and much poking and many tears later we’re home (via the chip shop as no time to cook) with one 7 yr old right arm in plaster. Got to go back tomorrow to have a proper one fitted and he can choose colours and patterns!  We’ll also find out how restricted we’ll be for the next 6 weeks or so. It’s a "Subtle Greenstick" apparently.

Ho hum.

Will put pics of cast up as soon as the proper one is on and set.
