Still learning stuff…

Dino is still doing work on Ancient Greece and find out all sorts of interesting things, drawing detailed pictures and reading loads. He made a cake pretty much by himself this week too and it was lovely! Mimi helped with the extra thick icing.

Today’s big thing is the he’s taken himself off to a corner of the sofa with his Cub blanket to sew on his old Beaver badges - he has loads and he’s done three of them. But he has until May to get them all on there so no real rush.  He’s off to his first camp in may and needs the blanket for that.

Both kids are knitting now and enjoying making things - dishcloths and doll scarves at the moment but it’s all good stuff. I’ll get pics of that in action at some point, when I remember.

Science

Dino started Cubs last night and he has homework! He has to grow three pots of cress under different conditions and keep a diary for the week to record what happens. So we have cress seed in a box (in the dark but with water); cress in a pot (water and light) and cress in a pot (light but DO NOT water). He started his diary by stating how he started each off, what the conditions are and what his prediction is for each.

He also has to locate, identify and draw 3 constellations and find out something about them. Not going to be easy with this weather but we’ll try.

Mimi is back at Rainbows tomorrow too.

I promise….

Mimi’s last Rainbows for the summer, and Dino’s last Beavers too. This was why we came home today, more than anything it was because they didn’t want to miss the last meetings.

It was a good job too because Mimi made her Rainbow promise (unexpectedly) and got her certificate and promise badge.

The badge is on the left of her shirt - it went a bit floppy as it’s a heavy badge on a loose shirt, but it’s there. Granny knitted the rainbow for her.

Note for Witchy Woo (who I know checks here for kid pics) Yes, those are the sunflowers behind her, I’ll get more garden pics for you if we get any dry days soon!

Salt and update

The 4 sweetcorn are doing well, considering the amount of munching they had. All are growing on nicely and being coddled far too much for a plant. emoticon We now have 4 of one pumpkin variety and 1 of another, 2 courgettes and 6 celery plants up. Still waiting on the peppers, which are taking their time. emoticon

Today we’ve tackled bad behaviour, made bread (discussion on how yeast works), been to the PO - tackled more unwelcome and innappropriate behaviour, and we’ve just tried making a salt solution so we can grow some salt crystals - as Beavers attempt failed. emoticon I’m sure we can do better…. Some housework was done too, and Dino has done some reading and identified ant species. He’s doing a sort of survey of invertebrates in the garden - each one has to be identified, he has to find out where it lives and what it eats and then work out if that means it’s good for our garden or a pest. He wants a third option now as a simple good or bad doesn’t really cover some of them. He’s really thinking and exploring things now and it’s lovely to watch.

Mimi has whined, wailed and been a pain. But now she’s playing with her Dora beanie thing and chatting away to it in an odd mix of mostly English, a lot of MimiSpeak and a smattering of Spanish words thrown in.

Parading pics (might be slow to load, sorry)

There were loads of ‘em, and 2 marching bands - and Dino got a special mention from his Beaver Leader for Helping to Organise Everyone.

I’m very proud!
