Technology, the interwebs and the like…

Dino’s on the Newsround site!

He wrote a press pack report about his abseil and it’s gone up today.

Read it here, shame there’s no facility to leave comments or rate it or something, that’d be nice.  However, there is a space for comments here if you want to….

Abseiling

Huge thanks to everyone who sponsored Dino for this - he’s raised over £300!
Holding £300 in their hands!

The abseil was yesterday - Sunday 26th April 2009 - and the weather was mixed with lots of sun and a few showers, some heavy.

Getting kitted up
Dino went up the rock (50ish feet up!) and he found it was so much higher than he thought it would be so he came back down again, very upset. But my brave lad went back up to try again and he got as far as leaning out and letting the rope take his full weight before he decided that actually he wasn’t going to cope with actually going down that way, so he climbed back down again.

He had a good go at it, and he’s very proud of himself for being brave and trying, even if he didn’t finish. We’re all very proud of him too, I hope you are.

This is as far as he got - but we’re still very proud of him!

Abseiling for charity.

Dino will be doing an abseil towards the end of April, I know I’ve mentioned it on here before but he really wants to hit the £200 mark if he can.

The Justgiving link is on the right if you want to chip in.

Thanks.

Knots, string and tying things up…

Hmm. Watching Dino sitting on the sofa half watching Star Trek with his nose in a book is lovely to see. He’s slowly working at Harry Potter (Book 1) - a few pages a day - it’s painfully slow but he’s doing it.

But tonight it was a book from the library - Pocket Guide to Knots and given his tendency to tie things up I do wonder if encouraging the Cubs thing was such a good idea now…..

Dino’s fundraising.

You’ll see a link on the right hand side here for Dino’s JustGiving page. He’s doing an Abseil to raise money for the British Lung Foundation, in April, in South Wales.

He’s never abseiled before and although excited, he’s also a bit nervous!

A message from the lad:

Hello,

I’m Rowan and I’m 8 years old, I am abseiling at Dinas Rock in South Wales, on April 26th and I’d like you to sponsor me so I can raise some money for the British Lung Foundation. I am doing this because my Granny has Emphysema and I want to help her and other people with lung problems.

So please sponsor me now!

Thank you,
From,
Rowan.

If anyone feels like chipping in then please do, he’ll be chuffed to bits. Please ignore his target as set today, it’s likely to change as he reaches his first target of £100. He wants to see how much he can manage by the day of the Abseil.

Pics will be posted when he’s done it…..

Still learning stuff…

Dino is still doing work on Ancient Greece and find out all sorts of interesting things, drawing detailed pictures and reading loads. He made a cake pretty much by himself this week too and it was lovely! Mimi helped with the extra thick icing.

Today’s big thing is the he’s taken himself off to a corner of the sofa with his Cub blanket to sew on his old Beaver badges - he has loads and he’s done three of them. But he has until May to get them all on there so no real rush.  He’s off to his first camp in may and needs the blanket for that.

Both kids are knitting now and enjoying making things - dishcloths and doll scarves at the moment but it’s all good stuff. I’ll get pics of that in action at some point, when I remember.

Something new…

We started the day by writing a list of jobs on the chalk board door in the kitchen and crossed each one off when done. That seemed to focus us all nicely, but I still have a couple of things to get done - including Nano.

One of those jobs was to move the hens so they’re closer to the house where it’s a bit more sheltered and not so grotty getting to them in this nasty cold, wet weather. We did that and the hens are now happily scoffing fresh grass, we cleaned their house out at the same time.

Kids did some workbook stuff and seeing as Dino made a single toffee apple at Cubs last night another was demanded for Mimi - so we googled for a toffee recipe, dug out an apple and we made toffee!

and both kids have toffee apples…

I shall be sampling the toffee slab later…

Cubs.

Dino making his Cub promise - he was very serious and didn’t slip up at all. He was afraid he would but he did really well.

Receiving his necker, Green woggle to denote his membership of the Green Sixer group and a whole bunch of badges for me to sew on his uniform.

However, on the way home he announced that he wants to learn to sew and then he can put his own badges on. So, sometime this week we’ll start that with the idea that I’ll carry on doing uniform badges but his old Beavers ones can now go on his Cub Camp blanket and Dino is planning on doing those himself.

Science

Dino started Cubs last night and he has homework! He has to grow three pots of cress under different conditions and keep a diary for the week to record what happens. So we have cress seed in a box (in the dark but with water); cress in a pot (water and light) and cress in a pot (light but DO NOT water). He started his diary by stating how he started each off, what the conditions are and what his prediction is for each.

He also has to locate, identify and draw 3 constellations and find out something about them. Not going to be easy with this weather but we’ll try.

Mimi is back at Rainbows tomorrow too.
